Day 45: The best of both worlds…
Alright, there has been enough seriousness going on in this life of mine that I decided to open up the box of questionable goodies that I purchased not too long ago and pick one that I would try.
What did the potato chip say to the chocolate? “I’m Frito Lay, if you have a Good bar!”
Seriously…. In the box of unique food items was a chocolate/potato chip bar. I love chocolate and who doesn’t like to indulge in a potato chip every 12 months?!?! I have to say, I love dark chocolate of ANY kind, but I really do like a delicious not-so-low-fat kettle chip every now and again. As I looked at this edible wonder before me, it seemed like the perfect blend of sweet and salty.
I had no reservations about trying this new treat, but I only had one fear… what if I REALLY like it? I mean, it isn’t one of those “fun size” pieces of Halloween candy… Oh no… this is 2.8 oz. of everything your Cardiologist warns you about and it’s just me and the bar and nothing holding me back. My only thought, “This could be oh so dangerous!”.
I then slowly but anxiously opened the package and tried to catch an aroma. It had the scent of chocolate with the tiniest hint of potato chip. The chocolate looked like regular milk chocolate on the front portion of the bar and on the back it appeared like a Crunch bar might with bits of recognizable pieces of crushed up kettle chips. I broke off a corner and brought it up to my eagerly awaiting wet lips. There was no hesitation or pause on this mission…. I tried to resist going too fast but my mouth had a mind of its own, it wanted that piece of chocolate and there was no time to wait and savor the moment. Sometimes, with indulgences this powerful, there is just too much anticipation and excitement that your hands move quicker than they should, as was the case today. I placed the entire piece of chocolate in my mouth and let it melt on my tongue for just a moment before stopping to try to savor the flavor–but that didn’t happen… I swallowed with absolute delight at the brief taste of that sweet and salty flavor.
It was at this point that I was happy that this was a big bar because I had what seemed to be an insatiable appetite for just this treat today. I reminded myself to be patient with the second bite. So in a responsible way, I slowly brought the chocolate to my waiting mouth and closed my eyes and let the chocolate rest gently on my tongue. I closed my lips and held it there to try to detect the exact flavors and texture. I tasted the creamy milk chocolate and felt the crushed potato chips tickle my tongue and I slowly, deliberately swallowed. I sighed with complete gratification and it was in the aftertaste that the kettle chip flavor was found! It was as if that second flavor were a gift from the Gods… how often do we indulge in some edible pleasure and it seems to be over before it even began… such was not the case with this tasty thrill…
I will confess in this private exchange that I did indulge in the rule of 3 today. One bite is a delight, two is even better, but three will make me a debtor… to the scale! There are many things that I could indulge in more than 3 times, but this rich simple pleasure is not one of them!
Sometimes we find our smile trying something different, new and perhaps even a little questionable… today, it was hard to resist such a rich mix of sweet and salty. In the end, my will power won, but my insatiable desire to have more has not been laid to rest. Wondering what tomorrow will bring…
