Day 24: Resistance is futile….
“Man who invented the hamburger was smart; man who invented the cheeseburger was a genius.”
I started the day knowing that I needed to get some serious activity in to prepare for this evening’s Quest. So, to start the day, I completed an 8 mile run on the Alter-G treadmill. It is a treadmill that is designed to decrease gravity by supporting the body to alleviate joint pain. With my knee not allowing me to road run more than 1-2 times per week, this allows me get my run in without damaging my knee too much. I was able to run the 8 miles at a 7:30 min/mi pace non-stop. The run felt powerful and simply fantastic… but it didn’t end there. I had an additional hour of strength training to ready me for my Quest.
Ahhh….The Quest…. If you haven’t figured out by now, I relish the opportunity to use my 5 senses when enjoying an activity or indulging in a food or…. To be able to feel the softest sweater… to see the first signs of a changing season… to hear the birds welcome the sunrise… to smell fresh baked cookies… and to taste….taste, is a sense I simply could not live without! I think about the foods that tempt my palate, leaving my tongue begging for more. Like chocolate truffles, so sinfully rich that they leave my mouth yearning for another and my mind reminding me that one is enough. Then there is a fantastic cup of coffee that has me holding the warm cup on a chilly morning and savoring every sip to keep me warm and inspire my mind to awaken to another day… Let’s not forget the taste of a fantastic spaghetti dinner… the noodles tenderly bathed in a garlic red sauce with freshly grated parmesan cheese wrapped tightly around a fork and placed eagerly into my mouth with just one delightful bite… the only saving grace in this meal is making sure to eat a true Italian serving… not more than I can handle, but enough to satisfy…
Tonight, I have made the decision to visit a restaurant I have resisted for so long. My resistance has been merely based on the name of the establishment… invoking a completely unhealthy experience, but knowing all the while of the sinful pleasure that could be had. Alas, I have decided that resistance is futile and I must try this delectable treat. My Quest takes me to “Fatburger”! Yes, the name is wrong for so many reasons, but perhaps right for just one… I hope that this burger completely satisfies me and leaves me wanting more.
I entered the restaurant and there sitting in the corner was Chris Ault, former Head Football coach of the University of Nevada and the mentor of 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick’s. I couldn’t help but chuckle. If College Football Hall of Fame Coach Ault is eating a Fatburger, and his life has been dedicated to creating healthy star athletes, then I will be absolved of my sin for setting foot into this restaurant. With that, I stepped up to the counter to order. The choices for size were many: S, M, L, XXL.. I really am not sure who could eat an XXL, but you know what they say, “Go Big or Go Home!” Lol! So, I went big! I ordered the large and a skinny fry… ironic, I know!
The customer service was fantastic and the food arrived quickly. It was huge!!! I could hardly hold it with two hands. The toppings were plentiful…cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, and oh the meat…8 oz of absolute delight! The burger was so big it could hardly stay together. I grabbed a hold of the burger and eagerly brought it to my mouth as if I hadn’t eaten in days! Yet, I slowly took the first bite so that I could savor every last flavor. I gave a heavy sigh and quiet moan of approval. Why did I resist this simple pleasure for so long? I would have to say, that this was easily one of the top ten burgers I have ever had and to think there are so many burgers yet to try!!!
I could not finish the entire burger as it appeared my eyes were bigger than my tummy when ordering. But make no mistake, this burger took me to a place where the worries of life disappeared for just a little while and a smile emerged from my face after just one bite. It confirmed for me that resistance is futile, and that sometimes a little indulgence every now and again is oh so good for the soul!
Feeling regretful that I hadn’t tried this sooner, but better late than never..… Wondering what tomorrow will bring…
